First look here as I landed in sunny Arizona! My parents rented a place near Mesa for a few weeks and with B being gone on a fishing trip up north I figured I might as well take a quick weekend trip and find some sun and spend some time with the parents!
Despite a small delay when leaving, it was otherwise a smooth flight! I was in Mesa in a tad under three hours (gotta love direct flights)
Mom and Dad were there to greet me at the gate! Proud of him for being our driver - way out of his element driving in such a big area (coming from a town of under 1,000 people!
First stop on the way to their place: grocery store! They needed some stuff and on my list was SUNSCREEN for sure and I thought I might as well grab some snacks too! - They were pretty astounded at the size of the grocery stores down south - it was pretty big!
Recent travels to AZ and some thoughts
I have to interrupt with a shout out!
Big thank you to this girl for the ride to the airport. Seriously so blessed to have you in my life!
I couldn't resist this GUAC! and yes it tasted JUST as fresh and delish as it looks! Also picked up some beer, a mix of cocktails (mike's hard light lemonade = YUM!) and some other snacks. Mom explained "we have coffee! - DECAF!" and you know that didn't fly with me ("Mom that means it's BROKEN COFFEE") - so I grabbed some of that too! The grocery store gave a senior discount - so that was also a perk! haha
It was a pretty low key trip with lots of reading, visiting, laughing and an occasional beverage of choice. Mom and dad didn't have WIFI or much of a TV at their place so I guess it was an even better reason to unplug. I accomplished nearly THREE books on my trip!
"Now is the time to CRUSH IT!" - new by Gary Vaynerchuk: business oriented and teaches and talks about marketing, being an amazing leader and social networking platforms. As always he is very candid and mouthy aka HONEST and I'm loving it
"The Champagne Diet" - quick read and was a great reminder of balance in your health and enjoying life! I love Cara -
"H3" - um..probably my FAVORITE leadership book to date. seriously go get it now!
Dad and I spent quite a bit of time sitting in the sun reading..no complaints here! He finished a book by Warren Buffet while we were there and we exchanged nerdy facts and figures quite a bit.
Found out that one of my coworkers was living very near us! On day 2 we met her at a local Starbucks and she got to meet my parents. Was fun to hear about her Arizona adventures & she is always so entertaining with her stories! She LOVES dancing and I was happy to hear that she has been dancing nearly EVERY night while living in the south! Was fun to see someone from back home - and for the record the iced unsweetened passion fruit tea from Starbucks is freaking amazing. SUCKED IT RIGHT DOWN in that heat!
Workouts were a bit scattered down here, but I did my best! I checked in with my current challenge group and they inspired me to get moving as they are killing it in their programs! I laced up my new mizuno wave riders and took them for a spin outside. Man the sun feels amazing...running in the 70 degree sun felt good on the bones and my knee and hip didn't hurt like it has been back home. Each loop in the park was .66 miles and I ran every day while I was there. Didn't put on many miles, but that is ok! I also mixed in some pushups, burpees, lunges for some strength training.
HOLY MOLY running feels way harder down here! I'm blaming the dust and dry heat? At least I hope that is what it was! My HR monitor read in the 150's nearly the entire time I ran. Back home it's usually in the 130's and with a resting HR of 40's to 50's that is quite the jump for me. Embrace the challenge though...right?
Dad was nice enough to help me find a workspot while down here! So blessed that I can still work on coaching...from ANYWHERE! I also met up with my friend Nicki! We met through instagram/facebook and have been friends for over a year and now FINALLY got to meet her in person! She is just as sweet as I knew she would be. and we have so much in common!! Was fun to catch up for over two hours visiting - we sat on the patio and soaked up some sun! Congrats to her on her recent home purchase and i'm enjoying seeing her posts of the painting and renovations!
Back for more coffee and checking in on the world on day 3! Thanks Dad for being my chauffeur. No complaints from this girl about coffee and the sun!
Mid afternoon lunch at Denny's (because we are fancy like that)
Lots of laying in the sun by the pool - and i DID find some tan lines believe it or not and avoided the burn!
Coconut milk latte for the win!
Other fav snacks to get me through:
instant oatmeal (fitoat brand)
Combat Crunch bars
Packets of Justin's Peanut Butter
Luna bars (yum to dark chocolate mocha!) - gotta get my chocolate fix
Lots of coffee was drank with the parents on this trip...no wonder i'm a coffee freak. It comes naturally I guess.
Thank goodness for social media! A good friend of mom and dad's found out we were in Mesa! He was able to get dad's phone number and set up for them to come visit us. It was fun for them to catch up over lunch and it made my parents so happy and feel more at home when they were down south!
This view from the Starbucks patio is far different than a view in North Dakota! Although I miss the fun trees and cactus..there really is no place like home!
Cheers to Arizona! Last night here in the palm trees so we decided a cocktail on the porch was in order. Priceless.
Barney was our amazing chauffeur to the airport! A HUGE thank you to him for EVERYTHING he helped me and the parents with during the trip! Laundry service, coffee visits, helping them set up a place to live and a ride and for all the rides around. And yes Barney this most certainly is a selfie!
All was smooth on the flight home. Got through security with plenty of time. Flight was on time and our direct flight back home was as smooth as it could be. Thank the lord.
Lots of thoughts this week upon return. Thankful for family. Thankful for loved ones. And while this wasn't your typical vacation with shopping, site seeing and cocktails at the pool bar I'm so grateful I went. Time with family is precious and you need to take advantage of every single moment. no matter what. It's been a week of ups and downs upon return - and I'm remembering that I don't have to do it all. It's ok to ask for help when you need it. It's ok to lean on others for support. You don't have to be strong all the time. Vulnerability is a part of life.
Live each day and embrace every moment. Soak it all in. Be present. Live.
