Nutrition can be SO confusing these days. Gluten free. Meat free. Dairy free. Sugar free. Low carb. It's a market SO focused on elimination - and while all that is a post just in itself - today I'm going to touch on cutting out dairy. I by NO MEANS am a licensed nutritionist - all I can share is my own story and background. I do recommend that before you start any radical changes to your diet changes that you consult your physician.
To be truthful I've never been a "good" milk drinker. It was always offered at meals growing up and I would choose water over milk every time. I would have milk on my cereal or in food, but just honestly wasn't a fan of the taste. Chocolate milk WAS a treat however! I did like other dairy products such as yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese and of course... ice cream! During my college years (I can't exactly recall when) I realized that all of a sudden... creamy milk products did NOT agree with me! Anything rich and creamy such as cottage cheese, cheesy soups & dips, ice cream, etc - well we won't go into specifics..but it just didn't digest. When I brought it up at a standard physical all my physician could tell me was.." well that sometimes just happens" - so... how did I DEAL when I "couldn't have" anything dripping with cheese or my FAVORITE..COTTAGE CHEESE?!?!!? - How have I adjusted to life? HOW DO I LIVE?!?!
Dairy just Doesn't Like Me...
I guess honestly when you feel sooooooo much better without something and you recall all the memories of feeling awful - those foods become pretty tainted. Does that mean I cut out the things I really love??? No way! I will have ice cream - just need to take a lactose pill prior to. So how have I replaced the lovely cheese, yogurt, etc - and how in the WORLD did I start?
I started with a LITTLE at a time! You have to find what works for YOU. I can't stress that ENOUGH. Just because one certain way of eating works for me it does NOT mean that it will work for someone else. Like I said - all I can do is share my story! What have I found?
Luckily there are a TON of non-dairy products these days!
Milk: cashew milk, almond milk are staples for me. I usually stick to the unsweetened versions and have found that cashew milk is creamier than almond (which seems more watery) - coffee shops are even offering version of their drinks with non-dairy milk OTHER than soy! Starbucks introduced coconut milk this year to their line up and many places do also serve almond milk! You just can't be afraid to ask
Cheese: I have found I'm able to have small amount of cheese without any issues - but still try and stay away from it for the most part! Cheesey soups, cottage cheese and dips are no-nos though. They do make non-dairy cheeses and to be honest I have not tried them. I have tried nutritional yeast! Sounds weird I know, but it tastes a LOT like parmesan and is DELICIOUS sprinkled on salads, sandwiches, flat breads and even popcorn!
Yogurt: they do have soy and almond milk yogurt out there! Can be found at many grocery stores or natural food stores
Cottage Cheese: I miss it. I really do! Haven't found any "substitutes" for it!
Ice cream: I try to stick to lighter versions and still take a lactose pill beforehand and that seems to prevent any symptoms! I could not EVER give this up.... sorrynotsorry. haha
Going dairy free has actually helped quite a few people in various areas of their health! Dairy is a very inflammatory food - and may be responsible for any symptoms such as bloating, acne, digestion issues, nausea, weight gain, etc that you may be having. Also - did you know that we are the ONLY mammal that drinks another mammals milk? Creepy right??? Just saying...
